What is Kite?
Kite operated from 2014 to 2021 as an AI tool focused on assisting developers in writing code. The platform aimed to enhance the coding experience by providing intelligent code completions and suggestions, leveraging artificial intelligence to understand code context and integrating with popular code editors like VS Code, IntelliJ, PyCharm, and others.
Despite building advanced AI for its time and gaining a significant user base of 500,000 monthly active developers, Kite ceased operations and is no longer supported. The company cited challenges in monetizing the product, as users were unwilling to pay, and acknowledged that the AI technology at the time was not yet advanced enough to provide the transformative leap in developer productivity they envisioned. Following its closure, much of Kite's codebase, including its Python type inference engine and analyzers, has been open-sourced on GitHub.
